Fifty years ago, ABBA’s new single, Take a Chance on Me, soared to #1 on the UK charts. It may seem an unorthodox connection, but the song’s message resonates with the work of the Catholic Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania.
Over the years, 115 partners and hundreds of donors have taken a chance on us, placing their trust in the power of endowment funds to sustain their beloved Catholic causes. Parishes, schools, and ministries quickly realized that if they wanted to be here tomorrow for their parishioners, students, and clients, they needed to start investing today. They all embraced the vision, made the commitment, and now, their generosity and foresight is building a legacy of faith that will last for generations.
Take a Chance on Endowments
Some Catholic parishes and schools told us “not now” when we first introduced the idea of an endowment. We knew it was a new concept for many people. But like a melody that stays with you, they kept hearing about the impact we are making in Catholic philanthropy across our five-county region. Now, they’re ready. They see how endowment funds create a strong, lasting foundation—providing financial stability today and ensuring their mission continues tomorrow.
Prospective partners have witnessed the tremendous growth the Catholic Foundation has achieved in 10.25 years (zero to $51.3M) and what current partner parishes, schools and ministries have gained with their involvement. The Catholic Foundation’s institutional investment strategy provides access to a larger diversified investment pool that allows more leverage for their money to grow. As of January 31, 2025, the portfolio has grown 15.36% in one year. Our goal is 7%.
In addition to providing continual oversight of the portfolio, which is invested with Catholic values in mind, the Catholic Foundation helps its partners market and grow their endowment funds. By bringing in new money through successful fundraising efforts and planned giving, a partner can grow their endowment funds quite successfully. This influx of new money allows the Catholic Foundation to rebalance and serves as a risk management tool that minimizes losses and maximizes gains. Our 115 partners, who have a total of 147 endowment funds with us, believe it’s working.
